Today I have something a bit different for you! I asked the wonderful and super talented Kitty to create a step by step tutorial using a pair of Stellen earrings to inspire a make up look. You might be familiar with her face already as she has used her Stellen earrings as inspiration for her looks in the past. I gifted her a set of triangle mix & match earrings as a thank you for letting me use her image on the front page of my website (wearing her BOLT earrings, have you seen it?) and she chose to use a black and white combination. You can see the tutorial here. She also agreed to an interview, so enjoy!
Hi! I’m Kitty, and I create fun and colourful makeup looks over on my Instagram page @make.up_kit! I’ve been a fan of Stellen’s jewellery ever since I bought my first pair of earrings from them at a handmade crafts fair a few years ago. If you follow me, you’ll know I often take inspiration from my various pairs of Stellen earrings for my makeup looks!
Tell me about yourself and describe your practice.
Hi, I’m Kitty (AKA @make.up_kit) and I like putting colours on my face! I’ve had my makeup account on Instagram for just over two years now, and that’s where I post lots of fun and colourful makeup looks. During the week I work from home at my full time job, so the weekends are when I create most of my looks.
My practice is really all about playing with bright eyeshadows, graphic liner and various colour combinations. I’ll usually sit down with a look in mind, often inspired by another artist, a pattern I’ve seen, or my earrings!
How or why did you get started?
I used to be such a tomboy and avoided anything to do with makeup, jewellery, any stereotypically feminine clothes, the colour pink – so basically the opposite of how I am now! I think the change of heart came when I started going to sixth form college, where you could wear your own clothes instead of a uniform. I saw all these other girls with such unique fashion and makeup, and it really inspired me to explore my own style!
My love for makeup just grew from there! I started experimenting with bright colours and had more confidence to wear bolder looks out and about. Then a couple of years ago, some of my closest friends convinced me to start posting my looks on Instagram, so you can blame them!
Since then, my main aim with @make.up_kit has been to inspire other people to get creative with colourful makeup themselves, and have as much fun playing with it as I do!
What is your favourite thing about what you are doing?
Oooh that’s a good question… I think it would have to be the small creator community I’ve found on Instagram. There’s so many makeup accounts I follow who really push the boundaries of makeup and art, and they constantly inspire me for my own looks. And the best part is, they’re all so supportive and kind! I can’t tell you what an incredible feeling it is to post a new look and have the people who constantly inspire me show it so much support and praise!
What do you look for in a makeup brand?
For me, a brand has to be cruelty free (i.e. they don’t test on animals) before I even think about ordering from them. Nowadays, there are so many affordable cruelty free and vegan brands to choose from that it’s a no-brainer for me. There are some really handy websites I use like CrueltyFreeKitty and EthicalElephant, where you can quickly search if a brand is cruelty-free and find out more information about them.
Besides that, I love brands that are colourful, affordable and fun, and that aren’t afraid to create strange lipstick colours or bright shadows that might scare some people off! Also, while it’s easy for someone of my skin tone to find products that suit me, I think it’s important to support brands who show diversity, like a good range of foundation shades or an inclusive marketing campaign.
Have you got a particular issue that you would like to raise awareness of?
It might not sound like much, but I really want to highlight how important it is to credit artists whose work or makeup looks inspire you. Whether it’s a full-on recreation (i.e. an exact replica) or you’ve just taken inspiration from a colour combination or liner shape you’ve seen another artist use, you should always credit and tag them.
It’s so disheartening when you see someone duplicate your look without crediting you. Of course, sometimes people have similar ideas without seeing each other’s work, but it’s just good practice to acknowledge where you’ve used other artists as inspiration.
It means that anyone who loves your look can find the original creator, plus the person who originally did it can see your look for themselves. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see someone recreate a look I’ve done, and credit me as their inspiration!
Do you have a motto or quote that defines your practice?
Maybe it’s not so much of a motto, but I always compare my makeup style to a toddler who’s stuck their hands in every colour of paint and smeared it on their face. So I suppose my motto would be
‘if in doubt, add more colour!’
What’s your favourite thing to do with your free time and why?
Creating makeup looks is my number one hobby, but aside from that I’m a bit of a granny! I like reading, going for walks, and watching movies and detective shows with my mum (our cat Daisy usually joins us too). I’m also a massive fan of board games – I’ll play anything from Scrabble to Machi Koro!
What piece of advice would you give your younger self?
Girl, just wear some eyeliner. You know you want to really.
Where can we find you on the internet?
