Alix from The Little Red Hen

For the series Good Folk on this blog I have sent interview questions to some really wonderful people who are either making things, running shops, or generally promoting sustainability. I think you will enjoy reading their answers as much as I have, and I hope they inspire us all with the knowledge that there are people doing good in the world!

This interview is with Alix who runs The Little Red Hen Jewellery. I have loved Alix's eco-friendly jewellery for many years, and I think we first met at a market in Whitstable one rainy Christmas a few years ago! She makes nature inspired pieces from eco-silver.

Tell me about yourself and the work that you do.

Hi, I’m Alix and I make recycled silver and copper jewellery, inspired by nature, folk art and the beautiful Kent countryside where I live. My business is called The Little Red Hen Jewellery and I make everything by hand from my home workshop. I use traditional metalsmithing techniques and also work with precious metal clay, a fantastic eco-friendly material which is comprised of pure silver recycled from medical, dental and technological industries.

I’ve always been creative and love the process of making anything by hand.  I was drawn to jewellery making as it’s the perfect fusion of artistic design and technical hands-on! It’s also convenient for working from home, as it’s a fairly small scale craft.

Every piece I create is made with lots of love and attention to detail. My favourite thing to make is personalised jewellery. Making a keepsake that will hopefully be treasured for years to come, is such a lovely thing to do.

It’s important to me to use recycled or sustainable products wherever I can. I use 100% recycled silver (otherwise known as Ecosilver) and many of my designs feature scraps of Ecosilver melted into new designs, so it’s like recycling twice!

All of my packaging is plastic free and my gift boxes are made from recycled materials and are recyclable. I use a fantastic UK company with a great eco-friendly ethos, called Tiny Box. It’s important to me to support other UK small businesses with an eco-friendly outlook.
