This interview is with Benita Nagra from The Abstract Bee: handmade bee-auties, since 2016, for you and your home. Including homewares, jewellery & fragrance which are eco and vegan friendly. Benita tells us about her business and how she got started.
Tell me about yourself and the work that you do.
My name is Benita and I run The Abstract Bee. I make homeware and jewellery with a focus on being as eco-friendly as possible! I use materials such as Jesmonite and plant based resins as well as experimenting with concrete to make coasters, tealights, jewellery and more! I also make vegan friendly candles in re-usable containers.
How or why did you get started?
I wanted to work for myself after working in the finance industry and realising it wasn't for me! I started off selling posters online and then carried on making and selling from there! I handed in my notice and never looked back!
What is your favourite thing about the materials that you work with?
Making things by hand provides such an immersive experience- it requires all of your concentration and can be incredibly relaxing and satisfying seeing something come together from scratch! All the materials I work with are pretty messy so I love embracing the chaos!
What is the most challenging thing about the materials that you work with?
The time! All of the materials I work with require lots of setting time meaning the result sometimes can't be seen for hours or even a day later! I quite like instant results so learning to not take things out of their moulds too quickly is something I have had to learn!
Where can we find you on the internet/buy your work?
