For the series Good Folk on this blog I have sent interview questions to some really wonderful people who are either making things, running shops, or generally promoting sustainability. I think you will enjoy reading their answers as much as I have, and I hope they inspire us all with the knowledge that there are people doing good in the world!
This interview is with Paulomi from Handmade by Tinni – Sustainable Statement Textile Jewellery.
Hi, I’m Paulomi and I am the designer behind Handmade by Tinni – statement jewellery with a heart and soul. I am a textile jewellery designer and maker. I create modern, wearable pieces of jewellery with organic cotton rope and yarn.
I mainly use age-old crafts and processes like macramé and knot work; creating colourful and bold designs is what makes my fibre jewellery stand out! I chose cotton as my main design medium as I am passionate about sustainability. It is sustainable & biodegradable, soft to wear, anti-allergic, colourful, and extremely flexible to let my imagination flow. I take great pride in making each piece by hand. My aim is to make you look beautiful and proud when you showcase a Tinni jewellery piece!
How/has working sustainably impacted your non-business life?
I am proud of my business choice and adapted similar ethos to non-business life. I try to shop small and from independent local brands as much as possible. Consciously, as a family we have cut down our plastic usage and my son is way more educated on sustainable living than I was in his age! Wish I knew and started then. I also add a regular feature on my newsletter on related topics to educate and inform my customers and followers.
What are you most proud of?
“It’s never too late to set another goal or to dream a NEW DREAM!”
I am really proud that at the age of 40, I could take the leap of faith and bravely start a design venture. It was not an easy decision but certainly very satisfying.
What are your plans for the future?
I want to create a brand that is statement, colourful, accessible, and yet has a solid base on sustainability. Handmade by Tinni – Sustainable Statement Textile Jewellery & Home Décor.
Can you recommend any other makers or businesses that work in an ethical or sustainable way?
There are plenty of makers that inspire me every day with their brand ethos. I would like to recommend the Indie Roller, Sustainable and Eco market database to find more creative people.
On the top of my head, I will recommend Kelly from MadebyKellyO
Have you got a particular cause or issue that you would like to raise awareness of?
For several reasons, we cannot get rid of plastic modern life. I really feel we should invest more fund towards upcycling and reusing plastic, even in fashion industry to combat this environmental issue.
What is the most challenging thing about the work that you do?
Balancing creative work with mundane tasks of running a business. I am sure many of my maker friends feel the same. It is one thing to make something beautiful with your hand and be proud of your creation to making it visible and available to potential customers. Let’s just say, I am not a listing fan on online platforms.
Do you have a motto or quote that defines your practice?
“Do more of what make you happy!”
Do you have any advice for people trying to shop or live more ethically?
Start small. We cannot adapt to too many lifestyle changes all at the same time. We should start small and once few practices are part of our everyday choices, then we can move on to adapt more.
It is easier to change habits than you may think. Just start with one change at a time and embrace it wholeheartedly.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Morning is my creative time. I go through my orders and prioritise by urgency.
Followed by photo shooting while the daylight lasts.
Afternoon is admin and work on my laptop with orders, marketing, promotion handling, etc.
Evening, after dinner will be my making time again when I cuddle up on my sofa in front of a favourite crime series.
What’s your favourite thing to do with your free time and why?
Reading books and spending time with my little boy. This relaxes my mind and body and fills my heart with happy warmth!
What piece of advice would you give your younger self?
Go plastic free!
Instagram is here to stay, get on with it!
What would be the top thing that you would change about the way we treat the planet if you could?
Shopping internationally even if the product is available and affordable, locally.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Sustainability is a lifestyle choice that must be ingrained in the next generation from the start. They should not make the same mistakes that we did.
