For the series Good Folk on this blog I have sent interview questions to some really wonderful people who are either making things, running shops, or generally promoting sustainability. I think you will enjoy reading their answers as much as I have, and I hope they inspire us all with the knowledge that there are people doing good in the world!
This interview is with Thomas from Just Think Eco, an Ethical and Sustainable marketplace, selling sustainable and eco friendly products from sellers across the UK.
How or why did you get started?
We got started at the beginning of the first Lockdown in March 2020.
For many years, it has been a passion project after increasing my awareness of the harm most of the products we use every day cause and struggling to find a place to purchase eco-friendly alternatives all in one place.
After being furloughed I finally found the time to create the website and start approaching companies.
What is your favourite thing about the work that you do?
Finding new companies to list with us that are working in innovative ways to create sustainable products in both how they produce and package. It's been so reassuring knowing there are so many great alternatives out there.
How has working sustainably impacted your non-business life?
Since starting Just Think Eco I've cut out meat and fish from my diet, I have made a massive effort to only shop sustainably, from my everyday essentials to upcycled items that last and organic fairtrade clothes. I've started to take a bit more time and consideration before buying new things.
What are you most proud of?
I’d have to say I am most proud of now having over 150 UK sellers on our platform selling over 1500 eco-friendly products. We've been blown away by the interest we have seen from both customers and sellers, we can't wait to continue to grow.
What are your plans for the future?
We plan to keep growing the platform and offer even more sustainable items, from clothes to vegan food. We also plan to make Just Think Eco a hub to start your journey and go green in all aspects of your life.
Can you recommend any other makers or businesses that work in an ethical or sustainable way?
All of our wonderful sellers! They are all working in ethical and sustainable ways and we are very proud to have them on our site. You can see all the sellers at www.justthinkeco.com/pages/seller-profile
Have you got a particular cause or issue that you would like to raise awareness of?
I'm writing this on World Ocean day so it feels right to spread the word about just how vital this part of our planet is! Oceans act as the largest carbon sink on the planet and host up 80% of the earth's life. It is vital that we protect our oceans to help fight climate change and the loss of biodiversity. One simple thing you can do to help this is to cut fish out of your diet from today!
Do you have any advice for people trying to shop or live more ethically?
Start small and take it one day at a time. Start with the everyday essentials that create lots of waste and fill landfills for thousands of years. Like toothbrushes and kitchen sponges.
What’s your favourite thing to do with your free time and why?
I'm very fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country with the Malvern Hills literally on the doorstep. So I enjoy getting up the Hills when I can, it’s very peaceful and the views are amazing.
What piece of advice would you give your younger self?
Don’t be afraid of failure and don’t put too much pressure on yourself, just start and do your best.
What would be the top thing that you would change about the way we treat the planet if you could?
If I could change one thing about the way we treat the planet it would be our addiction to cheap single-use plastic and our throwaway culture.
Where can we find you on the internet, buy your work, or join in?
